Foreign card Alipay verification worked after switching passport name order
Posting this because the error message was useless. My Visa card kept failing identity verification in Alipay until I entered my name exactly as MRZ order: surname first, given names second.
After that, the card linked and small payments worked at a convenience store and a coffee chain. Bigger merchant payments still asked for extra confirmation.
If you are stuck, compare your Alipay name with the machine-readable line on your passport before trying another card.

Good catch. The same name-order issue also affects some train bookings. I now copy the exact passport order into every travel app first, then adjust only if an app gives a clear reason.
The verification screen accepted my middle name only when I expanded it fully. Initials failed. This is worth adding to the starter guide.
